Friday afternoon on the Sports Animal talk radio, one of the guests was a media rep for the Rangers. As he talked about the steps a major league player takes on his way to the "Bigs", the conversation got around to how poorly trained so many of today's young baseball players are in the fundamentals of the game. He felt that this problem occurs because these kids grow up playing every year for their dads. In the mind of this baseball professional, these dads mean well but don't know enough about the game to give meaningful direction.

Uh, there may not be many, but don't overgeneralize. There absolutely are some VERY good coaches available in the 9-12 age groups. Parents just have to become more discriminating when they seek out a team. Check out the coach. Ask for his qualifications, THEN decide if he sounds like the person who is going to take your son to the next level.
