I agree with the call from the umpire, if a child is bilingual then he/she should be spoken to/speak in English while playing other English speaking children. If the umpires are to call the game for fairness and sportsmanship then he needs to be able to understand what is being said on the field. The coach should develop signs for his catcher to give the pitcher for their plays anyhow. If English is the dominant language for the whole group then it should be the language used. Otherwise, perhaps the team should provide a translator or notify the ballparks in advance that they will be using a 2nd language so that the ballpark could provide one for the umpires in order to guarantee fairness for everyone (including the players on both teams).
